Following the success of the first novel, Grant Naylor wrote a second during the hiatus between series III and series IV, titled Better Than Life (BTL). This is the audio cassette release of the audiobook, released in 1994, and read by Chris Barrie. Like the first novel, BTL develops and expands material from the TV show, in particular drawing on material from Better Than Life, Marooned, Polymorph and Backwards. But wait, there's more. BTL was released in 1990, the year preceding the broadcast of series IV and White Hole, however elements of that episode appear in the novel. Specifically, the return of Talkie Toaster, Holly boosting his IQ to 12,000 at the cost of reducing his lifespan to a few minutes, and the subsequent plummeting of Red Dwarf into a singularity. In the case of the novel though, it is a black hole, not a white one. Weeee-eeeeird!
