A couple of years had passed since the broadcasting of series VI, rumour had it that Grant Naylor had split up, and many people had given up hope of more Dwarf. They say the star that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, at the first six series and two novels of Red Dwarf had burnt so very very bright... though as it turned out, there was plenty more burn in Doug Naylor yet. 1995 saw the release of novel three, Last Human. Originally a joint venture of Grant Naylor, when the two parted ways it was agreed they would each write their own novel three. Last Human contains elements from Demons & Angels, DNA, Quarantine, Polymorph II, Legion, Camille and Gunmen of the Apocalypse. In a sign of future Doug Dwarf plots, the novel also features Kristine Kochanski as a main character, and interestingly she arguably has more in common with the Kochanski of series VII two years in the future, than the Kochanski of series I in the past, but she also loves Lister deeply. At the risk of spoilers, Last Human ends happily. Lister and Kochanski are together with plans to restart the human race and the crew happy and together on a new world.
