The Red Dwarf Smegazine (a term coined with issue three), was the mostly unknown official Red Dwarf magazine and comic book. Launched in 1992, the magazine covered 23 issues altogether- 14 issues in volume 1 and 9 issues in volume 2. Inside are comic strips, news articles, interviews, behind the scenes articles, episode guides, quizzes, competitions, publicity shots, full page artworks, and, occasionally, exclusive freebies. Comic strips begin with a couple of straight forward adaptations of The End and Future Echoes, before launching into completely original material and new adventures using previously established characters and places from the TV shows and novels. It is worth noting that even the episode adaptations are exceedingly good reads. The comics give a peek into a parallel universe of Red Dwarf, one with no budgetary constraints on production as the only limit was the amount the artists could fit on the page. Due to this, we see places, people, scenes and stories that Grant Naylor could only dream of bringing to the screen.
